Wear a tie like Alistair Darling
OK, so Chancellor Alistair Darling is unlikely to become a style icon anytime soon, but we did like his tie today. Darling was speaking about plans to nationalise Northern Rock. Plans that have received much criticism from opposition MPs.
The tie he chose for the big day was one covered in coloured circles. Much like our high quality Charles Hill tie.

A Nice Bad Tie Joke
A guy goes into a restaurant/lounge wearing a shirt open at the collar and is met by a bouncer who tells him he must wear a necktie to gain admission.
So the guy goes out to his car and he looks around for a necktie and discovers that he just doesn't have one. He sees a set of jumper cables in his trunk. In desperation he ties these around his neck, manages to fashion a fairly acceptable looking knot and lets the ends dangle free.
He goes back to the restaurant and the bouncer carefully looks him over for a few minutes and then says:
"Well, OK, I guess you can come in - just don't start anything."

Liam Gallagher Ties Knot
Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher married Nicole Appleton in secret this week. On Valentine's Day in fact. Awwwww.
Only a select few guests were there, and the secrecy of it all means there are no pictures. We admit it is highly unlikely that Liam wore a tie for his big day, but if Liam had looked closely at our website, then maybe he would have found one he liked.
We have come up with two ideas of our own...

The History of the Tie - Part One
We've decided it was about time you necktie fanatics were educated about the tie and the history of it. It's quite clear they are a great piece of attire, but in our series of blog entries we hope to teach you a bit of something about the history of the humble tie.
In part one we tell you about the necktie's beginnings...

The necktie can be traced back to the time of the Thirty Year War (1618-1648) when Croatian mercenaries in French service, wearing their traditional small, knotted neckerchiefs, aroused the interest of the Parisians.[1] The new article of clothing started a fashion craze in Europe where both men and women wore pieces of fabric around their necks. In the late seventeenth century, the men wore lace cravats that took a large amount of time and effort to arrange. These cravats were often tied in place by cravat strings, arranged neatly and tied in a bow.

The French fashion of the early 1600’s was a white lace ruff worn around the neck. This stiff, uncomfortable style extended even to French soldiers. Come the Thirty Years War, these ruffled Frenchies found themselves fighting alongside a group of fierce Croatian horsemen for hire.
One can imagine the French soldiers scratchy necked jealousy at looking over and finding that these tough Croats wore no ruffles but simply a cloth tied neatly around their necks. It wasn’t just the soldiers who noticed . The military higher ups were equally taken with it and within a decade the sun king himself, Louis XIV, was seen “a la Croat”. So it was that the cravat, a bastardization of the French word for Croatians, was born. It didn’t hurt the cravat’s popularity that France was strapped for cash during the war. While a ruff used many meters of lace and was very expensive, a hip cravat could be had for a pittance. Everyone from Charles II of England to Napoleon tied one on.

FA Cup 5th Round Ties This Weekend
It is FA Cup Fifth Round this weekend. There will be plenty of thrills, spills, upsets and demolitions. But one thing is for sure, the managers will all see fit to wear their ties for the occasion.
All kinds of colours and styles will be on show, but the one we always like is the plain burgundy red tie worn by Arsene Wenger whenever his stylish Arsenal side are on show.
